Vent: That popular collector at my local shop gave me horrible advice

So this guy named Mike who's been buying comics since the 80s told me to never bag board my keys because it traps moisture. I trusted him for like 8 months. Then I pulled out my Amazing Spider-Man 300 and noticed the cover had this wavy damage from humidity. Took it to another shop and the owner said that's complete nonsense, you need to bag board everything especially valuable stuff. Now I'm sitting on a book that went from a 9.0 to maybe a 7.0 because I listened to some old timer who thought he knew everything. Has anyone else had a supposed expert steer you wrong like that?

Man, it's wild how people treat their random personal habits like gospel truth. It's the same reason my uncle swears you need to warm up your car for ten minutes in winter, even though every mechanic says that's a myth.

Treat their random personal habits like gospel truth" is such a perfect way to put it lol. Ngl I used to be one of those people who thought warming up the car forever was necessary. My dad always did it and I just assumed it was a fact. But honestly after reading stuff like this and talking to a few car guys I realized it's mostly just old habits dying hard. Now I just give it like 30 seconds tops and go. Funny how we just adopt stuff from family without ever questioning it.

Man that Mike guy really did you dirty with that moisture advice. I had a similar thing happen with a local "expert" who told me never to press my books because it damages the spine. So I left this Hulk 181 with a nasty crease for years thinking I was preserving it. Finally took it to a pro presser and he fixed it up no problem, brought it from like a 6.0 to a solid 8.0 after pressing and cleaning. The crease was literally just a storage bend, not even a color break. Makes me wonder how many other books I let get beat down because I listened to someone who just repeated what their buddy told them in 1995.
