Appreciation post: the diver who talked me out of quitting after a bad day at Port Fourchon

I was about to throw my gear in the truck and drive home after a rough 80 foot dive where my comms kept cutting out. This old timer named Mike saw me packing up and just said 'first time your gear fights you, huh?' and offered to help me tune my through-water system right there on the dock. He showed me a trick with the earphone placement that made everything clear in like 10 minutes. Has anyone else had a random guy on a job site save your whole day like that?

Man that Mike fella sounds like a real one. The earphone trick is a lifesaver, I've had my through-water system act up in cold water and it's the dumbest thing - you just gotta shove that ear piece in a little deeper and angle it towards your ear canal. Most guys don't realize that the silicone seal can get stiff in colder conditions and lose contact. Bet that saved you from a long ride home.

Nelson, you're out here writing a whole manual for ear piece installation. Next thing you'll be selling a DVD on proper silicone seal maintenance. But seriously, your cold water silicone tip is pure gold. I've spent more time than I care to admit fumbling with those things in freezing chop, looking like I'm trying to give myself a hearing aid exam while my buddies wait.

Try warming the silicone with your hand a few seconds before inserting it, makes a world of difference in rough seas.
