Chose the old Kirby Morgan hat over the new lightweight one, no regrets after 40 dives
Back in February I had to pick between my beat up Kirby Morgan 37 and this shiny new composite helmet my dive sup was pushing. The new one weighed half as much and had better comms, but I knew my old hat inside and out, every valve and hiss. I went with the KM37 and honestly it felt like leaving a bar with an old friend instead of a stranger. First 20 dives on a pipeline job off Galveston went smooth, no fogging, no leaks, nothing. Has anyone else stuck with older gear on principle and had it pay off, or am I just being stubborn about weight?

Leaving a bar with an old friend instead of a stranger" is the best way I've heard anyone describe gear loyalty. My trimix regs are older than some of the guys on my crew, and the local shop keeps trying to sell me something lighter. Last month the O-ring blew on a deco bottle and the new guy panicked while I just swapped it out blind, no manual needed. New stuff is fine until it breaks and you're staring at it like a math problem. If it keeps you alive and you know every quirk, that's not stubborn, that's just smart. Heavier on the neck, lighter on the brain.
