Found a trick for clearing muddy mask seals on the fly

Was dealing with a site where the bottom was all stirred up silt and my mask kept leaking around the skirt. I tried rubbing a little dab of dish soap on the seal before a dive and it actually stopped the leak for about 45 minutes on a 60 foot job. Anybody else use something similar or got a better fix?

Ever try just spitting in your mask and rubbing it around real good before a dive? I've had that work for me in similar silty conditions, though it never held for a full 45 minutes like your soap trick did.

Is the fog really that big a deal though? I've dove plenty of silty spots and just learned to deal with it - a quick rinse and you're fine. Spit works okay but it's not some magic fix, and 45 minutes clear sounds like either perfect conditions or some really weak fog. Maybe I'm just not that picky, but it seems like people overthink mask fog more than actual diving hazards.

Spit in your mask, you say? That's a bold move for the pre-dive prep, but hey, if it works it works. I tried that once and ended up with what felt like a foggy fish tank in front of my face for the first ten minutes. Maybe I didn't rub it in hard enough, or maybe my spit just doesn't have the same anti-fog mojo as some people's lol. Either way, 45 minutes without a wipe is practically a miracle in silty water, so I'm sticking with the soap until my mouth gets its act together.
