Just hit 100 dives on the same Kirby Morgan 37, and a deckhand's comment on the boat yesterday caught me off guard
Was logging hours after a job in Port Fourchon yesterday, and one of the new deckhands looked at my logbook and said "man, that helmet's older than me." I laughed, but then it hit me. That 37 came off a retired diver's truck back in 2019 for $1,800, and it's been on my head for every job since, from shallow dock inspections to 180 foot pipeline work. I've rebuilt the exhaust valve twice, sent the reg in for service every year, and the seals are still holding steady. The hat doesn't owe me anything at this point. But I've also watched three newer divers in the past year blow through twice that much on used gear that didn't make it a full season. Made me wonder if I'm holding onto something solid or just being cheap. Any of you still running an old hat past the 5 year mark, or do you swap out sooner than that?
