Lost my mask seal in 30 feet of murk off Galveston pier

Was doing a hull inspection on a shrimp boat when my neck dam let go. Had to feel my way back to the anchor line blind, took me 8 minutes to surface and swap it. Anyone else carry a backup mask or just me?

I get what you're saying about it being a challenge run, but I don't think 8 minutes in the dark is that casual. Once your light goes out underwater, everything changes fast and panic can set in way quicker than you'd expect. Even if it was meant as a challenge, that's still a solid mental test for most divers.

What is it with divers and carrying a whole backup gear arsenal? You spent 8 minutes feeling around in the dark, that's a solid panic workout and a good story to tell.
