Old hand in Galveston said never trust a surface gauge until you dunk it, and he was dead on
Six months back a diver with about 30 years on me watched me eyeball my depth on a shallow pier job and stopped me cold. He said eyeballing the gauge is how guys end up at 40 feet when they swear they are at 25, and he made me dunk the gauge off the dock before clipping it on ever since. Sure enough, two jobs later my console read 12 feet when I was really sitting at 34, and that little dry check would have caught it in town instead of underwater. Now I dunk and zero at the start of each shift, takes ten seconds and it has already saved me once. What checks do you all run before the gauge even gets wet?
