Quit diving without a spare light after a murky job. Best decision ever.

Got stuck in zero viz once. Never again, now I always pack two.

Yeah, it's the small gear checks that get you. Like what jasonf35 said about tire pressure, it's that one time you skip it. For diving, I started treating my backup light like my car keys. I physically won't leave the house without my keys, so now I do the same with that light. I even keep it clipped to my gear bag so it's impossible to forget. That mental link turns a good habit into a non-negotiable one.

That murky Puget Sound dive taught me the same hard lesson.

Murky water is a whole different ball game. I lost track of my buddy in similar conditions off Bainbridge and it was terrifying. You really learn to trust your gauges and nothing else when the visibility drops.

See this happen all the time with small stuff people skip. Like not checking their car's tire pressure because it seems fine, until they get a flat on a rainy highway. That sudden scare is what finally makes them buy a gauge and check it every month. It's like we need to feel the fear firsthand before we really learn the lesson for good.
