Spent 4 hours trying to fix a stuck regulator valve on a dive helmet yesterday
The valve was just cross-threaded from the last job but I didn't check that first and ended up taking apart the whole breathing system before I found the real problem, has anyone else wasted a whole day on something that simple?

What a lot of people don't realize is that cross-threading often happens because the parts aren't perfectly clean. A tiny bit of dried grease or salt can make things feel tight even when the alignment is off, so your hands trick you into forcing it. Taking a few extra seconds to wipe everything clean and dry before you start might save you that whole dismantling nightmare.

Honestly this is way too relatable. That feeling when you've got half the helmet spread across the bench and you finally notice the threads are just a little bit off is the worst. Tbh I've done the same thing with a first stage regulator where I pulled the whole thing apart only to find a tiny piece of debris blocking the seat. Ngl the best thing I ever did was force myself to check the simple stuff first, even if it feels like a waste of time. Tape a checklist to your bench or in your toolbox lid, it sounds dumb but it stops you from going down that rabbit hole.

Funny you mention that, reminds me of the time I spent two hours chasing a leak in my drysuit zipper. Took the whole thing apart, waxed everything, checked the seals, the whole nine yards. Finally realized the zip had a tiny piece of fishing line stuck in it from a trip months before. Felt like an idiot but hey, that's diving for you.
