Spent a whole day trying to free a stuck shackle pin on a salvage lift bag in zero viz

It took me nearly 8 hours of fumbling with a punch and hammer in the dark, cold water before I finally got it loose by heating the pin housing with a small torch, something the old guys used to do back in the 90s but we never learn anymore.

My buddy Steve tried to save time by using a blowtorch on a similar shackle back in '08 and ended up melting the bungee cord inside the bag, ruining the whole thing. Never seen a guy go from genius to doofus so fast.

Respect the old ways but that sounds like a brutal way to learn. Modern gear and proper prep would have saved you six of those hours. Sometimes the hard lesson is the only one that sticks though.

Exactly. Pain is a great teacher.

Read somewhere that our brains lock in memories tied to strong feelings, good or bad. Guess that's why the hard way sticks with you.
