Watched a guy lose his comms at 60 feet in Port Townsend

He was waving his arms around like crazy trying to signal his tender, and it took a full 30 seconds to figure out what was wrong. That moment made me start triple-checking my own gear before every single dive - has anyone else had a close call that changed their pre-dive routine?

I used to be pretty casual about checking my gear before a dive. Thought I had it memorized and didn't need to go through every step. But then I saw a guy at the quarry lose his mask strap and spent a whole minute fighting to clear it while his buddy just floated there watching. That image of him struggling stuck with me. Now I do a full run through of everything before I even get near the water.

That waving arms like crazy part hits close to home. A buddy of mine had his reg freeflow at 40 feet and spent a solid minute flailing before his divemaster finally saw him.
