A ghost in the BIOS ate my whole afternoon yesterday

Chasing a random boot failure on a Dell Optiplex, turns out the CMOS battery was reading fine but the settings kept corrupting every time I powered it down. 4 hours of swapping RAM and drives before I just replaced that $3 battery and it fired right up. Anyone else waste time on a part you assumed was okay?
