Appreciation post: the repair shop on Delmar in St. Louis showed me a free fix for a dead laptop
I was killing time on Delmar Blvd in St. Louis last Saturday and ducked into a tiny repair shop to get out of the rain. The guy at the counter had a laptop open with the back panel off and he was reflowing a power jack with a cheap $12 soldering iron. I asked why he did not just sell the customer a new motherboard and he shrugged and said the jack reflow takes 15 minutes and saves them $200. Then he showed me his trick for testing a power jack before charging anyone: wiggle the plug while watching a multimeter and see if the voltage dips. I have been replacing whole boards for this exact problem for a while now and I felt kind of dumb standing there. Anyone else have a go-to shop or tech who taught you a shortcut that saved your customers real money?
