Changed my mind about thermal paste after a technician I know spoke up

I always thought spending $15 on thermal paste was a scam and just used the pre-applied stuff. Then a guy named Dave who repairs gaming laptops told me he saw a 8 degree temp drop on a Ryzen chip after switching to a decent paste. I tried it on my own build last month and he was right, my CPU fan barely spins up now. Has anyone else noticed that big of a difference or was I just lucky with my application?

Same thing happened to me with my build, @karenb97 is spot on about that wet chalk comparison. That 8 degree drop Dave saw is legit, thermal paste actually does matter.

Read one of those Gamers Nexus videos that tested like 30 pastes and the cheap stuff was basically wet chalk. Good paste is just a better heat bridge, not magic.

Seems like you just got a decent application, not everyone sees that much difference.
