Fixing a POS system at a beach bar sparked a fight about after-hours calls.

I was on vacation when the bar's system crashed. Some say we should always help, even off-clock. Others think it sets a bad precedent to work for free. I ended up missing sunset for a reset. How do you deal with emergency calls while traveling?

But what's the point of vacation if you're still on call? That reset could have waited until morning. Or the bar should have a backup plan. Working for free sets a terrible example. They will expect it every time. You lost a personal moment for a job that doesn't own your time.

Missing a sunset for a reset is just trading your own time for their lack of a backup plan.

Missing sunset for a reset? I've done that for way less.

Totally get that. Once skipped a friend's birthday dinner because the server crashed at 5 PM (a classic, right?). Felt bad, but the job always seems so urgent in the moment. Now I try to draw a line, but it's tough when you're the go-to person.

Honestly, that sunset was your real paycheck and you just gave it away for free.
