Had to pick between a used Dell PowerEdge and building my own server last month

My old NAS finally died after 5 years, so I needed a new setup for client backups and plex. I was looking at a used PowerEdge T320 on Craigslist for $250, but decided to build a ryzen 5 system instead for about $400 all in. The dell had better raid support out of the box, but I went with the custom build for lower power draw and noise. Three weeks in, I'm happy with it, but setting up ZFS took me a whole weekend to get right. Has anyone else gone back and forth between enterprise gear and consumer parts for a homelab?

The T320 would've been louder than a vacuum cleaner in a library, you made the right call on noise. And ZFS is a weekend project no matter what hardware you put it on.

Wait, are you saying ZFS actually takes less than a whole weekend once you figure out the quirks? Feels like every tutorial I've followed turns into a deep dive on tuning parameters that nobody warned me about.

@martin.riley actually got me rethinking my old setup. Loud and proud no more.
