Pro tip: A kid at my shop in Fresno asked why I still label every drive with tape, and it made me rethink my whole bench setup
Last month a new tech I hired asked why I put a strip of masking tape on every drive instead of just using the label maker. I told him about the time in 2011 when a client's drive got swapped with another one during a rush, and we lost 2 days of work recovering the wrong data. He said the new imaging software tags drives by serial number the second you plug them in. I tried it on a run of 6 machines last week and it worked fine, but I still keep the tape on hand. Anyone else mix old habits with new tools like this, or do you just go all in on the software?
The "tags drives by serial number" thing is slick until you plug in two drives from the same batch and the software gets cute about which one is which. Tape with a client name and date in your own handwriting never guesses and never needs a driver update. Software is great for the routine jobs, but when a job goes sideways at 9pm the tape is the thing that still works.
