Pro tip: I just read a report on how much dust a typical office PC pulls in over a year
I was looking at some old service logs from a bank we do contract work for, and I got curious about their cleaning cycles. I found a study from a hardware testing site that actually measured it. They ran a standard desktop in a normal office for 12 months, no special filters. The number was 1.2 pounds of dust. A whole pound of gunk, just sitting in there, cooking the parts. I opened a machine yesterday from a small insurance office in town that hadn't been touched in maybe three years, and the heat sink was completely matted. No wonder the CPU was throttling. It makes you wonder, how many 'slow computer' calls are just people needing a good blow out? What's the worst dust bunny you've ever pulled out of a system?

That 1.2 pound number is wild. Makes you wonder if the dust weight changes based on the office environment, like a workshop versus a regular cubicle farm. Would be interesting to see a comparison.

Workshop PCs must be absolute bricks of filth.

Used to think it was just a bit of dust until I saw the inside of my buddy's garage PC. Opened it up and found what looked like a whole felt blanket of sawdust and dirt matted over the fans. That 1.2 pound figure suddenly seems totally possible.
