That time a power strip almost took out a whole restaurant POS system

I was working a double at this busy spot in downtown Portland and the power strip under the host stand started smoking. One of the cooks saw it and unplugged it before it caught fire, but it fried three terminals and the order printer. Now every time I see a daisy-chained power strip in a server station or an office, I swap it out for a proper surge protector with a higher joule rating. Anyone else replace random power strips at friends' places after seeing what cheap ones can do?

I mean it's wild how many things in our daily lives are basically one cheap part away from causing a real problem. Like not just power strips but phone chargers and extension cords too, people just grab the cheapest option without thinking about what could go wrong.

Friend's place had a similar strip melt under his desk.
