Was surprised to learn most drive failures are heat related, not age
Pulled the SMART data on 30 dead drives we swapped out last quarter and 22 of them had hit max operating temp before they died. I always blamed age or brand, but it looks like airflow in the rack is the real enemy. Anyone else track temps before a drive gives up?

Honestly, I think you're just seeing what you want to see. 22 drives hitting max temp before death doesn't prove heat killed them, that's just where they end up after months of struggling with bad sectors or controller issues.
