A retired finisher in Amarillo told me to stop floating edges so wet, and he was right
I had been finishing slabs for 12 years and always liked working the edge while it was still shiny. A retired finisher named Ray watched me on a 40x60 shop pour outside Lubbock and told me to wait another 20 minutes before I touched the edges. I figured he was just old school and set in his ways, so I kept doing it my way for another few months. Then I started noticing hairline cracks along the edges on about a third of my pours, especially on hot days over 95 degrees. I tried his way on the next three jobs and the edges came out cleaner with almost no touch up needed. Now I want to know if you all wait for the sheen to leave the edge before floating, or is it just me who rushed it for years?
Watched a guy do the exact same thing for years until he finally tried waiting for that sheen to go away and never went back. Those hairline edge cracks on hot days will humble you fast, glad Ray set you straight.
