Fresh slab cracked 3 days after pour, my bad on the subgrade
Poured a 20x30 patio slab in Austin last month, and by day 3 there was a hairline crack running corner to corner. Turns out I skimped on compacting the fill under one edge, hit it with the plate compactor once instead of the usual 3 passes. Had to cut it out and repour that section, cost me about $900 in material and an extra weekend. Anyone else ever get burned by rushing subgrade prep and how did you explain it to the homeowner?
That rough, man. I did the same thing on a small walkway a couple years back, thought one pass with the compactor was enough on some backfill and ended up with a dip you could see from the street. Had to be straight with the customer, owned it, covered the repour myself. It stings the wallet but theres no way to hide a bad base once the concrete speaks up.
