Hot take: That old guy at the hardware store in Omaha said my magnesium float was a crutch
He told me, 'Real finishers use wood. You're just hiding your lines.' This was last fall when I was grabbing a bag of sealer. It got me thinking hard about skill versus tool. Do you think some tools make us lazy, or are they just smart work?

My uncle rebuilt his whole deck with just a hand saw and a hammer, said power tools were for hacks. Took him three months and the railing is still a little wobbly. I get the pride thing, but sometimes I wonder if the old way is just the hard way for no good reason. Like, if the magnesium float gets the slab smooth, who cares what it's made of.

Totally get that pride thing, but man, sometimes it's just stubbornness. If a tool gets the job done right and saves your back, that's just smart work lol. My crew would laugh me off the site if I made them use a wood float on a big pour.

My dad's neighbor refused to get a garage door opener for years, called it lazy. He'd wrestle that heavy wood door up every day, rain or snow. Then he threw his back out so bad he couldn't lift a coffee cup. Now he has a quiet belt drive opener and acts like he invented it. Sometimes the old way is just pain waiting to happen.
