My $30 Faraday bag test actually blocked the signal

Wrapped my phone and keys in that cheap Faraday bag I grabbed off Amazon, drove past the cell tower and my GPS froze for a full mile. Anyone else tried those cheap RF blockers or is the whole shielding thing just marketing?
