Trying to find the original source for that 'missing 411' national park map took me 4 hours yesterday

That map is a rabbit hole for sure. I spent a whole afternoon once just trying to verify one cluster of cases. The sources for that stuff are always buried deep.

Tell me about it. Those deep dives are a total time suck. You find one old forum post that links to a broken blog, which references a newspaper article behind a paywall. Next thing you know, three hours are gone and you're no closer to an actual source. It's like the info is designed to be impossible to pin down.

Read a piece once about how a lot of early internet history is just gone. Sites shut down, links die, and the backup projects miss huge chunks. There was this whole fan site for a 90s TV show that had episode breakdowns and interviews. It vanished around 2005, and now it's just a footnote on a wiki page with no way to see the original content. Makes you wonder what else we've already lost.
