Pro tip: I picked the cheap moisture meter over the $500 one and I regret it every single day
Last week we were wrapping up a 40 unit apartment building in Fort Worth and I had to decide between a $40 pin meter and a $500 pinless one for checking slab moisture before flooring went down. I went cheap because the budget was already tight and the guy at the supply house said the cheap one works fine for basic checks. Fast forward to yesterday, the flooring guy pulls up 600 square feet of LVP because his test showed 8 percent moisture and mine showed 4. Now I'm eating a $3,200 redo plus the schedule slip, and the GC is asking why my numbers didn't match his. I tried to blame the meter but honestly I'm the one who talked myself into saving 460 bucks on the tool that was supposed to protect the whole install. Anyone else been burned by going budget on test equipment, or am I the only one who learns this lesson the hard way?
Reminds me of when my buddy bought a used table saw off a guy for $80 to save cash on a deck build. Blade wobbled just enough that every cut was a hair off, and by the time he finished the deck boards looked like a bad game of Jenga. He spent the whole weekend redoing it and swore the $200 new saw would've paid for itself in saved time. Cheap tools have a way of billing you later.
