TIL the reason our last job site in Phoenix kept running out of porta potties
I was on a job in Phoenix last August, 90 degree heat, 45 guys on site. We had 3 porta potties and we ran out of toilet paper by lunch every single day. I finally asked the super and he said the rental company only puts out enough for like 30 people. So we were short by 15 guys worth of toilets. He called the rental company and they sent one more, but it still wasn't enough. Has anyone else figured out a rule of thumb for how many units you need per person? I'm thinking 1 per 10 guys now.
Yeah, "short by 15 guys worth of toilets" is exactly how it feels. I've been on sites where the rental company just doesn't account for how fast things fill up in the heat, especially when guys are chugging water all day. My rule of thumb is 1 toilet per 10 guys minimum, but if it's hot like that Phoenix job you gotta bump it up to 1 per 8 or so. Also request the rental company to bring extra paper rolls... they always seem to short you on that too.
Went to a job once where the foreman got so fed up he started counting flushes on a clipboard. Told the rental company we needed two more units before lunch or he'd start billing them for lost labor. They showed up with one and a roll of sandpaper for paper. Everyone on that crew still talks about the "paper shortage of 21" like it was a war story.
