Update: the $40 moisture meter we ignored saved a $12k drywall redo

I was skeptical of that cheap pinless meter our foreman bought off Amazon last spring, but after it caught 18% moisture behind a supposedly dry wall in a Reno hotel lobby, we now check every framed section before closing it up, and honestly, has anyone else had a budget tool outsmart the expensive brand name ones?

That 18% reading is no joke. Same thing happened to me with a cheap pin type meter on a remodel, it flagged a wet spot behind tile that the expensive one we used first completely missed. Saved us from a nasty callback, now I don't care what it costs, if it works, it works.
