Walked a job site in Detroit last week and saw subs using phone flashlights for layout

I was checking on a renovation in Midtown Detroit and walked into a framing crew setting walls with phone flashlights. The room had no temporary lighting at all. Three guys holding iPhones while another guy tried to mark a door opening. Took them 45 minutes to do what should have been a 10 minute layout. Is this normal on smaller sites or am I just old school for expecting proper task lighting?

Honestly I read about a big contractor up in Grand Rapids that started requiring hard hats with built-in lights after a similar incident slowed their whole schedule down. Ngl that sounds like a total safety violation waiting to happen.

Total safety violation waiting to happen" - I mean is it though? Hard hats with lights built in are pretty standard on a lot of sites these days, I've seen guys using them for years without any issues. It's not like they're wiring up a strobe light or something crazy. If anything it makes people more visible when they're working in dim areas which should be a good thing. I get that it sounds different but calling it a safety violation feels like a stretch. A contractor trying to keep their guys from tripping over stuff in the dark doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world to me.
