Just realized I was cutting stair stringers wrong for 9 years
I was on a job in Tulsa last month and the homeowner's son, maybe 19, watched me lay out a stringer. He asked why I wasn't using the framing square with the stair gauges locked in. I had always done it by measuring down and over with a tape, one step at a time, and it worked fine, or so I figured. Then I checked my last set of steps against a laser and they were off by almost a half inch over 13 risers, all because I was stacking small tape errors. So which is it, do you trust the gauges or is tape and math just as good if you're careful? Curious what the old timers here do.
