Bleach disaster at a wedding last Saturday changed my whole approach

The bride wanted icy platinum but her hair was box-dyed black - I lifted too fast and got orange splotches. Now I always do a strand test first no matter what the client says. Any of you had a color meltdown that taught you a hard lesson?

Three years ago I had a client who wanted to go from black box dye to lavender... I ended up with muddy green roots and it took three sessions to fix. Now I do a strand test and tell everyone it's gonna take multiple appointments, no exceptions.

4 years ago I had a client ask for rose gold over box dye black and I ended up with this awful mustard yellow situation. I read somewhere that box dye has metallic salts that can mess with lightener in ways you can't predict. @the_sam is SPOT ON about the strand test being non negotiable because I learned that lesson the hard way too. Now I always tell people their hair might break off if we rush it and I don't care if they get mad at me for saying no. That orange splotch thing happened to me once and I literally had to cut 2 inches off the ends after the damage set in. Strand tests and patience are EVERYTHING in this business.

Dude the orange splotch nightmare is real. Had a client with black box dye and I tried to rush to platinum too and ended up with what looked like a bad tiger stripe situation. Took forever to fix and I learned that strand test is the only way to keep my sanity.
