Choosing between a classic bob and a textured shag for a client
A regular client came in last week wanting a big change but couldn't decide between a sharp, chin-length bob or a longer, piecey shag. I had to pick a direction to start cutting. I went with the shag, thinking it would grow out better and fit her wavy hair texture more. The whole cut took about 90 minutes, focusing on lots of internal layers and face-framing pieces. She loved the movement and how easy it is to style now, just using a sea salt spray. For those of you who do a lot of these 'in-between' consultations, how do you guide a client when they're truly stuck between two very different styles?

My friend Sarah went through this exact thing at her salon in Austin last month. She was torn between a blunt bob and a shag, and her stylist asked her to describe her dream hair day, which was all about easy, messy texture. That made the choice clear. It reminds me of what happened to @jana_black, so her stylist was super careful to keep the front pieces long enough. The shag turned out perfect because it matched how she actually lives her life, not just a picture she saved.

Honestly, I ask them which one they'd be more scared to try. That fear usually points to what they really want but are holding back on. A lot of times they're stuck because one cut feels safe and the other feels exciting. I'll say, "Which choice feels like a fun risk?" Their gut answer tells me everything. Then we talk about if the 'risk' is just a styling change they can learn.
