I still think the 'lived-in color' trend looks messy on most clients
Last week in my chair, a client showed me a picture from a big Instagram stylist wanting that super grown-out, faded look. I told her honestly that for her fine hair, it would just look like a bad grow-out in three weeks, not a cool style. Three years ago in Seattle, I saw a lot of stylists pushing this, but I've always felt a clean, fresh color line looks more polished and intentional. What's a trend you think looks good on social media but not in real life?

I mean, I get what you're saying about fine hair, but I've seen it look really good when it's done right. It's not just a grow out, it's a soft blend that grows out nicely. Maybe it depends on the stylist's skill level. The messy look on social media is often way too harsh and stripey in real life though.

That stripey look happens when they use foils on hair that's too fine. It just can't hold that much contrast. A good stylist will use a balayage technique with really thin sections, almost painting it on. It costs more, but it grows out soft instead of leaving a hard line. My sister's hair is like that, and it took three tries to find someone who didn't make it look like a bad badger.

My last stylist charged extra for that soft balayage blend.
