My mentor in Phoenix said to stop double shampooing clients with fine hair, and now I owe her lunch
Six months ago my mentor Rosa pulled me aside after a blowout and said fine hair clients only need one wash because the second strip dries out the scalp and makes roots flat by day two. I brushed it off for weeks until three regulars started complaining their volume died fast, so I tried her way and every single one of them noticed the change. Any of you had a mentor call something right that you swore was wrong, and what was it?
Is it possible your fine hair clients just have hard water or buildup issues that one wash isn't really fixing? I've been doing this twelve years and I still double shampoo most fine hair, just with a lighter hand on the second round and cooler water. The trick for me was never the number of washes, it was how much product I was leaving behind and how hot the water ran. One wash on a client who uses dry shampoo daily is going to leave junk at the root no matter how gentle you are. Rosa might have been right about your three regulars, but I'd bet it was the scalp getting beat up, not the count itself.
