Overheard a stylist say 'foils are dying out' and it got me thinking

A girl getting her roots done at the chair next to mine asked if balayage was the only option now, and her stylist said foils are basically old news except for blondes under level 7. Has anyone else noticed clients asking for more lived-in looks over full highlights lately?

Jumped into this exact thing with my stylist a few months ago! I was all set for my usual full foil and she asked if I wanted to try something different. She ended up doing a partial foil with a balayage finish and I was honestly shocked at how much better it looked. The grow out is way more forgiving, like I can go 8 weeks instead of 4 without looking crazy. And it just feels more natural, like my hair is supposed to look this way instead of having that obvious stripe line popping up. I'm totally sold on the softer lived-in thing now, for real.

Yeah @the_paul, what was her reason for talking you out of the full foil?

Oh man, yes! I literally just had this convo with my stylist last week. I walked in wanting my usual full foil and she was like "are you sure?" and talked me into a partial with some balayage bits instead. I was nervous but honestly the grow out is SO much better, I don't have that harsh line after a few weeks. Foils feel like they're for a specific kinda look now, not the default for everyone. I think it's just way more popular to have that softer, melted color that doesn't scream "I just got my highlights done.

Your stylist convinced me to try living mascara once. Never again.
