PSA: I finally figured out my blurry gel topcoat problem after 4 months of guessing
So for the past 4 months I kept getting these cloudy spots on my gel topcoat, mostly on clients with longer nails. I blamed my lamp first, then my topcoat brand, and even thought it was my prep. Last week I sat down with two $12 bottles of topcoat at my kitchen table in Boise and did 20 swatches on tips. One bottle cured crystal clear in 60 seconds, the other stayed tacky and foggy no matter what. Turns out I was buying a no-wipe topcoat that just is not meant for my 48 watt lamp, plain and simple. I switched back to the wipe kind and every single set this week has come out glassy. Feels silly that it took me that long to just test it side by side. If you are dealing with the same cloudy thing, check your lamp and topcoat combo before you toss your whole kit. What lamp wattage are you all running with gel, because I am curious if 48 is on the low side.
48 watts is fine for most gels, the real issue is that some no wipe topcoats need a stronger lamp or they just won't cure right. Been there with a batch that stayed tacky no matter how long I left it under. What matters more is the wavelength match between your lamp and the product, not just the wattage number. A 48 watt LED can beat a cheap 60 watt if the diodes are the right kind. Glad you tested it side by side, that is how you actually solve these things instead of buying new stuff every month.
