Rant: I used to use a heavy gel for every updo, now I barely touch the stuff
I made the switch about 6 months ago after a client in Austin begged me not to use gel on her fine hair. I thought gel was the only way to keep a chignon tight for a wedding. But her hair just fell flat and got crunchy by hour two. So I tried a light mousse and some pinning tricks I saw from a stylist in Dallas. Now I only use gel for super coily textures or humidity nightmares. For most updos, the hold comes from how you place the pins and backcomb, not from slathering on product. Anyone else find that less product actually gives a cleaner finish that lasts longer?

Learned that the hard way after my bangs looked like a helmet at my cousin's wedding.

Thin them out with thinning shears next time, seriously. That saved me from the same disaster, now they frame my face instead of sitting on it like a roof.

Gotta admit, I was team gel all the way for years. I figured if you wanted an updo to last through a reception, you needed that heavy hold, period. But then I did a bridal trial where the client had hair like silk, and the gel just made it look oily by the time we got to the photos. Swapped to a tiny bit of mousse and went hard on the backcombing, and that thing stayed put for nine hours. Funny enough, @logan_mitchell, your bangs story hits home because I used to treat gel like it was the only fix for every hair problem. Now I only break it out for humidity or curls that just wont listen.
