Spent three hours trying to match a client's old balayage from a photo
Had a new client bring in a picture from her last stylist, but the formula wasn't listed and the tones were way off. I ended up doing four separate test strands before I even started the full service. What's your go-to method for color matching when you don't have the original formula?

I read that Brad Mondo always says to start with a neutral base and add tiny drops of the warm or cool tone until you hit the match. I tried that with a tricky root blend last week and it saved me a whole test strand. Do you find it easier to work with the colors you already have stocked or do you ever run out for something special?

Four separate test strands sounds about right. I had a client last month who wanted to match a five year old photo of her own hair, sun faded and everything. Ended up mixing a level 7 with a dash of copper and a tiny bit of blue to cancel the orange. It's never just one bottle from the line.

Honestly that part about it never being just one bottle from the line really got me. I used to grab a single shade and hope for the best. Tbh seeing how you broke down that sun faded color mix, with the blue to cancel orange, actually makes sense of why my old method failed so much.
