Been seeing a lot of guys skip the pre-lift meeting on smaller jobs lately...

Just watched a crew set a 5-ton AC unit on a roof in Phoenix last week without a single word between the operator and the ground crew. They just used hand signals and assumed everyone knew the plan. It matters because even a 'simple' lift has blind spots and weight shifts. I've been doing this for 15 years and that's how a quick job turns into a long day real fast. How do you guys make sure the talk happens when the boss isn't around to push for it?

Who steps up to lead when the foreman's not on site?

We had a guy, Mike, who just naturally took charge. He wasn't the oldest or loudest, but he knew the job inside out and people listened. When our foreman was pulled to another site, Mike would gather us for the talk without being asked. He'd keep it simple, just run through the big hazards for the day. It worked because he had respect, not just a title. How does your crew usually handle it?

Heard a safety guy say a toolbox talk is cheaper than a funeral, so who starts the talk on your crew?
