I finally caved and bought a $1500 portable weather station for my truck and it saved my whole week in Denver.
I always thought it was a waste of cash, but having real-time hyper-local wind speed and direction data on my phone from the site itself, not the airport 15 miles away, let me safely squeeze in two extra lifts on a tight schedule when the forecast said to shut down, so what other site-specific gear has actually paid off for you guys?

Oh man, my buddy's avalanche beacon saved his life.

Seriously though, how often do those things actually get used? Feels like a lot of gear is just for worst case scenarios that almost never happen.

A lot of that gear just creates more noise to sift through. Most of the time, the basic forecast is good enough if you know how to read the sky and feel the wind change. You can spend a fortune chasing perfect data and still make a bad call. Sometimes simpler is better.
