I started tapping the hook with my knuckle before every single lift and it changed how I read the load
About 3 weeks ago on a Thursday I was setting up for a pick at a job site out in Aurora and the rigging looked fine, straps tight, no twists, everything by the book. Something made me tap the hook with my knuckle before I gave the signal, just a dumb habit I picked up from an old hand back when I was green. The sound was off. Kind of a dull thud instead of the clean ring I'm used to hearing. I climbed up and looked and the hook latch spring was about shot, it would have held for that lift probably but I don't like probably. Swapped it out and the whole crew stood around for 20 minutes while I did it, and I could feel the eyes on me. Since then I tap the hook before every pick, not because a book says to, but because my ears caught something my eyes walked right past. Anyone else got a weird little check like that they do before a lift? Curious what sound or feel gives it away for you.
