Manual rigging beat my fancy spreader bar setup last week

I run a 50 ton Grove in Charlotte and spent two days rigging a spreader bar for a steel beam lift on a tight site. The engineer swore it was the only safe way, so I followed the plan. Then the beam shifted weird in the wind and I had to abort. We switched to a simple choker hitch with two tag lines and got it set in 40 minutes flat. The spreader added all this extra hardware and headroom issues for no real benefit on that particular load. I get that spreader bars have their place, but sometimes the textbook answer is just overkill. Anyone else find that basic rigging outperforms the complicated stuff on cramped jobs?
