Shoutout to the old crane hand who fixed my swing brake issue in 10 minutes

I was struggling with a swing brake that kept grabbing on my Liebherr LTM 1050 last week. An older operator I've known for years walked over during a coffee break and said 'back off the brake pressure adjustment screw a quarter turn, then check the oil level on the hydraulic tank.' I did it and it ran smooth all day. He told me he learned that trick back in the 80s on a Grove RT. Made me realize I lean too hard on manuals and not enough on guys who've been there. Any other simple fixes you've picked up from older hands that made a big difference?

@claire872 did that Cat guy ever show you the wrench tap trick on any other machines?

Ain't that the truth. Had a similar thing with an old Cat dozer once - the manual said one thing but this old timer just tapped a valve with a wrench and it stopped leaking. Said he'd been doing it since the 70s. Makes you wonder how much real knowledge is just walking around in old coveralls.

Wait, he learned that trick on a GROVE RT back in the 80s? That's like a completely different dinosaur compared to a modern Liebherr. I'm amazed that a fix from an old orange machine with cable controls still works on a computerized German crane. It just shows how little the actual hydraulic fundamentals have changed at the end of the day. Honestly, the guys who spent decades with their hands on the grease fittings and pressure gauges know stuff you'll never find in the factory service manual.
