Finally figured out how to make my fantasy world's magic system not break after 4 months of tinkering
I spent like 3 hours last night trying to patch a plot hole where a character could just teleport anywhere if they had a drop of water, and it turned into this whole rabbit hole about elemental limits. Turns out I just needed to add a rule that magic draws from the user's own body heat, so they pass out if they overdo it. Has anyone else spent way too long fixing one tiny rule in their worldbuilding and then felt kinda dumb when the fix was that simple?
draws from the user's own body heat" is a solid one, but I gotta say that's actually kinda brilliant in a dark way because now you've got a reason for mages to be paranoid about winter or desert climates where temperature control is a mess. That one little rule just opened up a whole new set of story problems instead of closing them down, which is what good worldbuilding does in my opinion. I spent a month trying to figure out why my necromancers couldn't just raise an infinite army from a battlefield, and the fix ended up being that each soul can only be pulled back once before it frays apart, which sounds obvious in hindsight but man did it feel like a win.
