Hit my 500th short story rejection and it broke something in me
I counted yesterday. 500 rejection emails, exactly, since I started submitting in 2019 out of my apartment in Tucson. The 500th one came from a lit mag I actually thought I had a shot with, and it hit different than the first 499. I didn't just feel bummed, I felt like the feedback loop was rigged or my voice was just wrong for this whole scene. Has anyone else crossed a number like that and seriously questioned if they should keep writing, or did you find some way to flip the switch?
