I used to think writing prompts were a waste of time until I tried a random one from a library book
I mean, I always thought they were just cheesy exercises, but I grabbed a book called 'The 3 A.M. Epiphany' from the Seattle library last month and gave one a shot. The prompt was 'write a scene where a character learns a secret while fixing a broken toaster'. I ended up with a 2,000 word story about a retired spy finding a microfilm, which was way more than I expected. Now I'm actually using them to get past my writer's block. Has anyone else had a prompt completely surprise them like that?

Seriously, it's just a writing exercise though, right? You got one good story from a random prompt, but is that really gonna fix your block for good? Sounds like a lucky break more than a real method.

Same, prompts feel silly until one just clicks. Got me writing a whole horror story from a "lost sock" prompt once.
