My neighbor's 10 word writing prompt cracked my block after 6 weeks
I've been stuck on the same fantasy story since March, barely getting out a paragraph a day. Last Tuesday my neighbor Hank, who never writes anything longer than a grocery list, asked what my trouble was. I told him I couldn't figure out how my main character would react to losing her map in a foreign city. He just said, "What's the one thing she'd never do to get home?" That single question got me writing three pages that night. Turns out my problem was I kept picking the easy path for her, the safe route. Asking about the opposite forced me to think about her flaws and fears instead of her strengths. Has anyone else found that a super simple prompt from a non-writer beats all the fancy writing tools out there?
