Collector said one thing, credit report said another
A debt collector swore I owed $1,200 from an old utility bill. Pulled my report and the account was already settled in 2019. Told them to send validation, never heard back. Has anyone else had collectors push a debt that wasn't even on paper?
That whole thing smells like a fishing expedition. Had a similar deal happen with a medical bill once. They kept calling about some balance from years back, and I kept telling them I never got a single statement for it. Finally asked them to send proof of the original charge, and it was a bill for a procedure I never even had done. They went quiet real fast after that. It’s like some of these places just buy old lists and hope you panic and pay without checking. The credit report is the real source of truth, not some phone call from a stranger. If they won’t put it in writing, they know it won’t hold up.
