My attempt to get a better credit limit by calling the bank backfired spectacularly

I called my card company to ask for a higher limit, thinking my good payment history would help. The agent said 'sure, let's run a hard inquiry' and my score dropped 12 points. Has anyone had a better way to request a limit increase without the hit?

Some banks offer soft pull limit increases if you check your online account.

Oh yeah, that's a solid tip. I just got a random bump from my bank that way last month, no hard pull at all. It's worth checking your account every so often.
