Paid $300 for a credit repair service that just sent dispute letters I could have mailed myself
I was stressed about a few old medical bills on my report and signed up with a company I saw online. They charged me $300 upfront and all they did was send the same basic dispute letters to the credit bureaus that I found templates for online for free. The bills are still there six months later. Has anyone actually had a good result with one of these services, or is it always a scam?

Those old medical bills are the worst, they often need a different approach than just a dispute letter.

Ever notice how everything needs its own fix now?

Yeah it's like they want you to forget so they can add more fees. My cousin had one pop up from like three years ago, and they'd sold it to some collection agency that was impossible to talk to. He ended up having to call the original hospital's billing department directly and it was a whole thing, took forever.

That "whole thing" with the billing department is exactly right. My buddy got a bill from a collection agency for an ER visit two years back. He called the hospital and they said the debt was sold, but he kept asking for a supervisor. They finally pulled the old file and saw his insurance was supposed to pay. It took him six weeks of calling every Tuesday to get it cleared.
